China’s Tourism Agency Scolds Three Top Scenic Spots After Frequent Visitor Complaints

(YicaiGlobal) Feb. 27 — China’s tourism watchdog has rebuked three of the country’s top tourist attractions after repeated visitor complaints about personal safety, overcharging and forced shopping.

The three are the Old Town of Lijiang, a national 5-A scenic spot and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the southwestern province of Yunnan, Jingpo Lake in Mudanjiang city in Heilongjiang province, and Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park and Polar Lan in Liaoning province. The China National Tourism Administration ordered them to make improvements within six months, it said on Feb. 25.

In China, the 5-A classification is supposed to represent a world-class level of tourist attraction and service. But some top-rated locations are often involved in service-related scandals. The number of complaints against the Old Town of Lijiang is always high, with visitors frequently reporting being physically attacked. Earlier this month, several female tourists were seriously injured after quarreling with a waiter.

Yunnan’s vice governor went undercover on a group tour after this year’s Spring Festival. In one tourist shop, Chen Shun experienced for himself not being allowed to leave without having bought a certain amount. This is a regular tourist grievance.

Fierce price wars among Chinese travel agents has led some guides to supplement their income with commissions for leading visitors to certain tourist shops.
