An overview of the Commerce Stream

Commerce is a popular stream among HSC (10+2) students in India. Having studied Commerce in Class XI-XII allows candidates to choose from a multitude of courses at Graduation level, paving the way for a range of career choices. One of the major benefits that Commerce students have over Arts students is that they are eligible for both Commerce and Arts courses. This course selection, be it academic or vocational, at the time of college admissions are crucial. It must be an informed decision taken after having a complete understanding of the course one is opting for.

Another point to note is that for Commerce students, while Accountancy, Business Studies, and Economics are core subjects, Mathematics is optional. Thus, Commerce stream can be categorized into:

  1. Commerce with Mathematics where the subjects are Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and Mathematics


  1. Commerce without Mathematics where the subjects are Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and Computer Science/Political Science/Hindi/Sociology or any other course being offered in place of Mathematics.

Eligibility for admission in Commerce Stream

  • Candidates must pass in Higher Secondary School examination from a recognized educational board

  • They should have Maths and English as core subjects

  • Minimum 50% marks are required at 10+2 level

  • Although candidates from the Science and Arts stream are also eligible to apply, those with Commerce stream are preferred

  • There is no work experience required for the course. However, students with work experience can also apply

Syllabus and Course Description

Bachelor of Commerce degree is typical of 3 years and could be either in the annual system or semester system of assessment. Many Universities also require students to complete a project in order to earn the degree. A typical B.Com. The course has the following components:
